That's a normal way in Windows, too, but only in applications that have the menu bar. IN the context of MacOS command+o is quite logical, as there is in fact the new to Mac's don't even know the menu bar is there, since other environments have no menu bar on the desktop and the reader doesn't prompt about it.

As to what is too small, if you're drive has plenty of free space (less than 85% used) then you should be ok.
